MEDICAL SCRIBING

The function of a medical scribe is to assist the doctor in keeping medical records. An electronic medical record (EMR) system must contain information on the patient's visit, including the patient's history, the findings of the physical examination, and any procedures or tests that were performed. Along with accepting calls and scheduling appointments, medical scribes can help with other clinical tasks like filing orders, collecting samples, and preparing lab tests. Another responsibility of medical scribes is to ensure that the medical records are accurate and up to date.

The primary duty of a medical scribe is to assist the doctor in recording patient encounters as they occur. This entails accurately and efficiently entering the patient's medical history, physical exam results, laboratory test results, and results of diagnostic testing into the patient's electronic medical record. The list of responsibilities could also include entering orders, monitoring lab results, and obtaining data for research initiatives. Medical scribes must be familiar with the software that the particular practice or facility uses as well as the relevant clinical protocols and medical jargon. Additionally, they must always be able to maintain patient confidentiality and privacy.
